I loved the rest of this series, especially vol. 3. This book, which I'd looked forward to, fell apart due to a pacing problem, repetition, and a weak "conflict" for H/H. They were perfect for each other, had known each other for ages. Someone would say one thing wrong and they'd call it quits. Two paragraphs later they were perfect for each other, then someone would say something wrong, then... Multiply this about three dozen times, including one Big Black Point where the heroine turns from the hero in disgust. I re-read the section five times trying to figure out what had gone wrong, and couldn't find anything.

Our Hero had a propensity to, when in the heat of dangerous action, spend paragraphs thinking about how he was lusting over the heroine. Our heroine kept admiring the hero, using the same repeated descriptions. When completely, dangerously exhausted, she would spend a few hours making fireworks-inducing love to the hero.

I just felt like the book ignored the basic fun premise: two crazy-rich Londoners who have to deal with three sets of provincial relatives arriving in their high society. What we actually got kind of repeated the situation in a previous book.

The prose is well-written, but the book could have used MUCH stronger editing and perhaps a re-think of the basic plot to make it more original and exciting, like the other books in this series.

Formidable Lord Quentin The Rebellious Sons Book 4 Rebellious Sons Series edition by Patricia Rice Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I liked this story. It and Wicked Wyckerly A Rebellious Sons Novel are the two best of the series. My major complaint is that Quent's story is the last but it was the first ebook.....and it is definitely NOT a satisfactory standalone. I constantly felt as if I should know characters and background that were not explained. The publisher should be shot.

I read this one, then waited for the others to be released...finally. I liked Wyckerly's story and it gave a lot of background for the series. Book 2 was fair; Book 3 was the pits.

There are other synopses out there and I'm too irritated over the whole experience to write one. I've really enjoyed some of Patricia Rice's novels but I'll be very careful in future to not fall into the same trap her publisher threw me into with this one.

If this were truly a standalone, it would be a solid 4 stars. It's not.
I'm giving this story 4 stars, which is the same as I gave Wicked Wyckerly (Book 1) but this story isn't as good. The writing is good and I've enjoyed the characters. My gripe with the publishers is that series has been released totally out of order and this is the last story. I've had to preorder the third. Anyway this is the story of the 2 matchmakers we encounter as secondary characters in the other books. The H is the fourth son of an impoverished Marquess and is in trade. The h is the dowager Marchioness of the late Marquess, who never produced an heir and so the H's father inherited the title and entailed property but not the cash. The h inherited the cash and has enjoyed giving small dowries to the women in the family that her late husband ignored because he was tightfisted. The H and h have had a good friendship but the H has always desired the h, from the time she first married her first, much older husband, 10 years before. One of my main gripes in a romance is when the h becomes too 'strong' and this was one of those books, where the h wanted to wear the pants in the relationship. A bit grating towards the end.

+++Spoilers+++
The main characters are exceedingly strong and I couldn't see how the author was going to get them together and she does it in quite a clever way. The H makes a decision that he wants to marry the h so that she can get guardianship of her half-siblings and so that he can get her in his bed. There is a lot of will they, won't they get married that I found annoying towards the end. I excused the sexual relationship outside of marriage because we knew that the H saw her as his fiancée and not as a mistress. I did think they were a bit too blatant towards the end - I doubt it would have been accepted at that time.

As I said it was a good story but not the best. The first 80% was really good but then certain things became way too annoying e.g. blatantly sharing a room, the h insisting on going to the docks to rescue her horse, the h being overly strong and not knowing when to back down, the wavering about getting married.
